Re: Rita M. Zeichner
Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas:
My brothers and I are continuing to seek answers about what happened to our mother, Rita M. Zeichner, on Monday August 23 in Nevis. The injuries sustained that night resulted in her death. The doctor who attended her stated unequivocally that the injury was the result of great force that had to have been inflicted by another person. Members of your government have publicly stated that my mother's death was the result of an accident, but this is not what the doctor said, and it is not what the police have said.
I have created a web page which is receiving more than 500 hits a day. The address is http://www.walterzeichner.com/nevismurder.html I am making it my mission to let all potential visitors to Nevis and St. Kitts know that they will not be adequately protected from harm as things currently stand within your government and your police department. My mother was not adequately protected, despite previous break-ins and pleas to the police to help her. Why?
I want you to know that we will not rest until a competent investigation has been conducted. It is true that the more time passes, the more difficult it will be for a thorough investigation to happen, so I suggest that you get the Nevis Police to increase their vigor on this as soon as possible.
My mother loved Nevis, and I have come to love Nevis too. It is my intention to honor my mother by helping her leave a legacy of a safer Nevis. You are in a position to be part of this, or to be an obstacle to it. That is up to you.
It would be a wise step to take seriously the increasing violent crime in Nevis, to acknowledge it and to do what you can to prevent it rather than trying to minimize it so that tourists will be lulled into a false sense of safety. This is not just about tourists, however. This is about everyone in Nevis. There is a murderer at large, possibly someone the police have used as an informant and are thus reluctant to apprehend. That is unacceptable.
I would also like to remark upon the fact that subsequent to my mother's death neither my brothers nor myself heard word one from your office. You made no effort to communicate with us your condolences, or your will to have this crime solved. That certainly calls into question your leadership. I encourage you to consider my words and think about the impact of your decisions in this matter.
